Spoiler: the horse succumbs to the sadness and sinks into the swamp, leaving Atreyu to crawl on alone.

It’s still absolutely brutal. And the whole harrowing scene is an excellent metaphor for what it feels like to go through very difficult times, to feel like you’re drowning in grief, or wrestle with depression.
