Store Our Great War

Our Great War

Sale Price:£25.00 Original Price:£29.99
sale

“We have no great war, no great depression. Our great war is a spiritual war. Our great depression is our lives.”

From a speech by Tyler Durden, played by Brad Pitt, in the 1999 movie Fight Club. There are many exceptional things about this movie, based on the 1996 novel Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk, and it is well worth a read, watch, or re-watch. Its anti-capitalist subtext is arguably even more relevant today than it was 25yrs ago, and virtually everything Tyler says would work on a T-shirt.

Unlike our grandparents, and their parents before them, nobody’s dropping bombs on us, or asking us to go and fight (and probably die) in some stupid war. Instead we are kept distracted, divided, and entertained, just enough to keep us on the treadmill, beavering away in our bubbles of safety and privilege, while our governments continue to wage wars and commit atrocities overseas, just as they always have.

“We're consumers. We are by-products of a lifestyle obsession. Murder, crime, poverty, these things don't concern me. What concerns me are celebrity magazines, television with 500 channels, some guy's name on my underwear.”

Fashion. Hollywood movies. Social media. These things are silent weapons in the relentless battle for our attention, keeping us passive, docile. and thoroughly preoccupied by an endless stream of utter nonsense.

“Reject the basic assumptions of civilisation, especially the importance of material possessions.”

You probably don’t need another T-shirt. In all likelihood, you have enough clothes in your wardrobe to last you the rest of your life. That’s what makes this piece of the collection somewhat ironic. How many of us are yearning for a more minimalistic existence? How many of us are prepared to crawl out from under our duvets, to leave the well-furnished familiarity of our comfort zones, and do what must be done? How many of us are ready to fight?

  • Direct to garment print

  • 160gsm, 100% pre-shrunk organic cotton

  • Unisex fit T-shirt

  • Bubblegum Pink (other colours available on request)
